Wrap-Up/Reflections

Finally the end! I made it! What a learning process!

I'm quite impressed with myself for finishing this. When I
started I didn't know very much about all this web stuff.
Now I feel like when someone talks about it or asks about
RSS or Blogging at lest I have an idea of what their talking about.

Some of my favorite discoveries were:

RSS feeds-Now I know what that little icon means.
MySpace-Interesting
Goodreads-If I can keep up with it.
iTunes-Love the website. I down load music all the time
and will try podcasting more.

I thought it was almost to much information to retain.
I hope I can remember it all.
I didn't like signing up for websites that I knew I wouldn't use.

I was surprised with MySpace. I really was against having a MySpace
and put it off for awhile, but after getting it going and using it I like it.

I'm glad I did this class, I never would have learned about this on
my own.

Alternative Blogging

Microblogging, Twitter, Jaiku, Tumbler where do people have the
time to do all this stuff. I can't keep up with my blog let alone all
of these. I really don't want to know what people are doing every
minute of the day and I wouldn't want them to know what I was
doing.

The only good thing I could see with Twitter is companies that need
to keep in touch quickly.

Audio/Video: Video

Here is a video from YouTube, its one of our own!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu_hm99xV5k

I think these one minute critics are great for book talks. I think the
libraries could use videos for lots of things. Besides book talks they
could tell about programs going on in each library, do "how to" videos
and show what the library does.

All the different websites were a bit overwhelming for me.
I'm not into all that stuff so I probably won't use it.

Audio/Video - Podcasting

I've always been interested in Podcasting but never took the time to do it.
I looked at all three podcast directories and found Podcast.net easier for me.

Not to sure how to find things yet. The only thing I found that I was
interested in was in iTunes. It was for people who like to knit and read
books but don't have time to do both. It's called Craftlit.

http://craftlit.blogspot.com/

I could see the library using it for book talks and letting people
know what programs are going on.

Audio/Video-Music and other Audio

I've have an ipod so I've done itunes before and love it. I didn't know that there were so many other music websites out there, should have known! After going through these websites I liked IMEEM the best for videos. I really like watching music videos, so this one was fun.
I haven't done and podcast downloading yet but will give it a try one of these days.
Some things that I don't like about these websites are you always have to sign up just to look around.
I'm not sure about using it in the library except I like watching the One Minute Critic on book talks, I'm sure you could do more with that.
I hope CDs are not dead but mp3 players are very popular!

Online Applications/Tools: Google Docs

I tried out Google Docs. I typed a document then sent it to my FVRL email.

I then opened my email, did some changes to the document, saved it

and sure enough it was on my original document. Pretty amazing!

The only draw back I could see was, I sent it to my husband but he

didn't have a g-mail account so he couldn't add to it.

I think Wikis are easier in that regard.

Cool Stuff

I played around with Wordshoot, Yahoo Answers and Scrabulous. I thought some of the games on Wordshoot were fun to play. Some of the other websites you had to register to get in and I didn't feel like registering to anything right now. I've checked out other people's MySpace and some are really cool. It's amazing what's out there.

Wikis

I didn't know what a wiki was so this was very helpful. I went to several different websites and thought they were targeted mostly to older and educated people. I think its a great way for companies to collaborate on projects that a lot of people need to work on. The FVRL Wikis were fun to look at. I don't think I would like to add or change anything on other peoples wiki but you never know. I think I'll try it when my family goes camping and we need to decide on who brings what. This could be fun!

Goodreads and LibraryThing

I created an account with the
Goodreads website. http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/986183

I decided on Goodreads over LibraryThing because of the way it looked and it was easier to use.

Both of these websites are fun because you can see what other people have to say about the books they've read. Now I can keep track of the "soooooo" many books I want to read. You can even join a book group like the "One Minute Critic" book group!

Technorati

This website confused me. I'm not sure why you would want to keep track of all the blogs out there but I guess someone does. I felt like I was lost and didn't know what I was looking for.

When I typed in learning 2.0 it seemed to take me to the same place so maybe I wasn't doing it right. I think I'll move on to the next step.

Del.icio.us

I think del.icio.us is great. I first heard about this website from taking a class at FVRL but didn't take the time to start my own del.icio.us account. Now that I have an account and have spent some time with it I really like it. I can now save my favorite bookmarks to del.icio.us and have them where ever I go.

I enjoyed watching the One Minute Critic in the isdesk account. What a fun and great way to find out about books. Sam was great! I'll have to try a Peter Lovesey book!

Generators

Ok, I have to take back alittle about MySpace. Now I can see pictures of my kids and grandkids and keep intouch with some of my relatives.

Enought about that.

Generators are fun.
I tried the Fortune Cookie Message Generator and the Billboard Generator.
When I have more time I will try out a few more of these. I don't think my girls know about generators so it will be fun to tell them about something they don't know!

Social Networking - MySpace

MySpace - What a website. I have no interest in using MySpace but that's me. After hearing about what goes on in MySpace, I just don't want anything to do with it. Sooooo for the class I did sign-up. I looked up my girls and my niece and that was nice. I can see where the "younger generation" would like it. I for one won't use it and I don't think to many people in my generation would, but I could be wrong! As far as the library and MySpace, I don't think your going to get very many people to look at it. I think they would rather just go to a website. I'm sure someone out there probably in our own library will come up with a great idea for it. I would never have thought of looking up a library there if it hadn't been for this class. I think the kids that use MySpace are wanting to look at people's pictures and chatting.

INSTANT MESSAGING - MEEBO

For people who work at their computers all day, this would be a great way to communicate. As for me I wouldn't use this at home because I'm not on the computer that much. I could see using it in the library for reference questions but you might get so many you couldn't answer them all. I know that some of the library staff use IM and like it, I just haven't tried it yet.

More on RSS

Some of the searching tools were helpful in giving me ideas. However, I'm not one to sit and surf the web without a purpose in mind. I found Google blog search difficult. When I searched for "gardening" it was too broad, and I couldn't always find the RSS icon. At first I liked Topix.net because the first page was easy to read and understand, but after playing around with Syndic8.com I liked it too. I'm still learning about all this internet stuff and didn't realize there was so much more than paying bills and email!

I'm not sure if RSS would be good in the library. I don't know how many people even know about RSS or how to use them.

Thursday, January 10, 2008

I think RSS "Really Simple Syndication" is a great idea. I wish I had known about it earlier. Mashups and blogging really aren't my thing, but this I can use. I think it's great to have all your news come to you in one place and not spend hours searching the internet looking for it. I will definitely pass this information on to others. I used google.com/reader because I have Gmail and can use them together.

One site I enjoy www.npr.org

Love Libraries

I found working with mashup very trying. I tried several different ones and finally figured out how to do it. I liked Spell with Flickr and Flickr Sudoku but will have to work on them later!
For this one I used Trading Card Maker.
